Traditional Lime Works & Pointing

It doesn’t get more Irish than O’Flaherty Stone. We are 8 Gen stonemasons and our family worked on many of the most famous buildings in Ireland. Continuing our Irish tradition, we offer Traditional Lime Works & Pointing.

What is Traditional Lime Works & Pointing?

Traditional lime pointing is the technique which is used to fill in the joints on stone buildings and walls. With this method, the stone wall can breathe as the lime mortar is porous. This is a huge advantage to lime pointing – compared to cementer mortar that traps moisture. Lime pointing helps elevate the condensation and mould growth on the surface of the stone and reduces the stone corrosion. Hence, lime pointing aids the structural integrity of the building and wall. Investing in Traditional Lime Works and Pointing is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective long-term solution for stone buildings.

Lime is an ancient technique employed in the construction of nearly all old buildings throughout Europe and the world. This versatile natural material is fundamental for conservation and repair work. We don’t use imported lime, we buy our crushed limestone from Clogrennane, Co.Carlow. Firstly when we inspect and old building we search first for what we don’t need to do i.e. does this builder need re-pointing, we believe in conservation rather than just restoration of buildings.

Is Traditional Lime Works & Pointing Right For Your Property?

We find A big issue now is building that were re-pointed in thee last 20-50 years with cement/concrete lead to massive damp issues in homes both traditional and modern. The advantage of lime is it allows the building to breathe naturally, no causing moisture trapping within the walls.  Whereas Pointing on a traditional built building such a stone cottage is really maintenance. A traditionally built building using lime can potentially last 100s of years, though the lime does become perishable over that time, so the initial inch or 2 that you see on the outside that takes a beating from the elements and this will be what needs to be maintained and repaired.

The O'Flaherty Family

Fortune Favours The Brave

The O’Flaherty lineage that brought us to where we are today was based in Saggart Co. Dublin and worked on the construction of Saggart Church in 1849. We take immense pride in our heritage and our family history of working in Masonry. Today, our owner Killian is the 8th generation of a line of stone masons dating back to the 1800s.

Killian’s grandfather, Sean (the 6th generation), was a retired stone mason and bricklayer who often spoke about his life in the trade, the men he worked with, and even the Stone Mason language bear lorraigge. Fascinated by his family lineage, Killian gathered stories and images of the many generations of O’Flaherty stone masons. Today, Killian has images of his great-great-grandfather (Richard, the 4th generation) and great-grandfather (Thomas, the 5th generation). Additionally, Killian impressively collected a range of stories dating back to his 5x great-grandfather. The O’Flaherty family legacy of 8 generations working in masonry and its contribution to the inclusion of women in a largely male-based industry, is a fine representation of Irish history in the modern world.

O’Flaherty (Middle Irish: Ua Flaithbertach; Modern Irish: Ó Flaithbheartaigh), is an Irish Gaelic clan, based most prominently in what is today County Galway. We are known as the Ferocious O’Flaherty’s.
